Union Foundry and M&H Valve Host "An EHS Focused Introduction to Foundry Operations" Course

As part of McWane’s continuing effort to develop its technical staff and to improve its environmental performance, Union Foundry and M&H Valve recently hosted the second 3-day training course for environmental, HR, safety and legal staff from across the McWane family of companies. While the course last year was restricted to environmental staff, this year the course was opened to non-environmental staff that wanted to better understand McWane’s foundry operations.

The goal of this course is to provide an overview of common foundry operations and to assist in understanding and managing the environmental aspects and issues associated with those operations. The course involved classroom instruction on the various foundry operations including melting, molding, cleaning, machining and coating and focused on the science of these operations, environmental controls and opportunities for pollution prevention along with in-plant tours of the various
operations.

The instructors for this course were Benu Chakraborty from M&H Valve, Charlie Chastain from Union Foundry and Larry Bowers from McWane Corporate Environmental.  The course was attended by
environmental staff from Bibby Ste-Croix and Fonderie Laperle, Kennedy Valve, Union Foundry, Clow Water, and McWane Corporate along with staff from Corporate Legal, HR and Safety.

The attendees left with a better understanding and appreciation of McWane’s foundry operations and were universally appreciative of the opportunity to attend this interesting and lively training class.  The course will be repeated in the future and will continue to be modified and improved to meet the informational needs of those attending.
