McWane Canada to shutter Fonderie Laperle amid unrelenting offshore import competition

Shutdown will reduce capacity by 10,000 tons of street casting products

OURS, Quebec, Canada – Oct. 22, 2024 – McWane Canada today announced the permanent closure of its Fonderie Laperle. Production will immediately cease with the shutdown to occur in stages, with a focus on liquidating remaining inventory and fulfilling regulatory environmental obligations, with all operations estimated to shut down within one year.

The foundry primarily manufactured street castings ─ a product segment that has been continuously decimated by the staggering increase in unfair offshore import competition in the Canadian market. The reduction in municipal and street casting sales in recent years led Fonderie Laperle to reduce its 2024 production forecast to 50% of average production. The closure will impact approximately 90 positions.

“Our immediate focus is on our employees and providing them with accurate information and answering their questions,” said McWane Canada Vice President Rick Benoit. “Hourly and salaried employees impacted by the closure will be eligible for severance packages and free outplacement assistance. Counselors are available for employees and their families through the company's Employee Assistance Program.”

McWane Canada will continue to produce plumbing, waterworks and OEM products and serve its customers through the Bibby-Ste-Croix foundry, which was not impacted by this announcement, and will continue its usual operations.
